As seen in Star Wars Epsiode II: Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter uses the large circular ring to enable the craft to jump into Hyperspace to travel large distances. Without it the fighter becomes much more agile and an awesome fighting force. This agility is put to the test when Jango Fett in his Slave 1 ship chases Obi-Wan in the Geonosis star system following their battle on Kamino.
